How To Be Different

How To Be Different

“The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don't tell you what to see.” - Alexandra K. Trenfor

The Rorschach Test is a projective psychological test developed in 1921 to measure thought disorder.

I just took one online.  It was a little bit weird because, even though I'm not psychotic, (OR MAYBE I AM! 🤡) I felt the slightest amount of pressure to agree with the multiple choice answers provided.

And for that secondary option, besides the obviously violence biased ones like, "a crushed spine" or "a bloody part of my body" ... I wanted to know of what I say was the most common thing people saw or where it landed on that spectrum.

Time

Time

"Here’s a humbling exercise, whenever you read an old book that speaks about contemporary events, look at the names.

How many of these people--who were important enough to warrant a mention at the time--seem important now, decades or centuries later?

How many of them have you even heard of?

How silly does the author’s reverence seem?

How ridiculous does their assumption--that future readers would obviously know who and what they were talking about--that they didn’t bother to provide much context, seem?

Well, this timeless process is happening right now, as we speak...

Freedom

Freedom

"We do not have to “gain” freedom because freedom has always been with us and is not something to be gained in the end through strict and faithful adherence to some definite formulas. Formulas can only inhibit freedom and pre-formations only squelch creativity and impose mediocrity." - 🥋Bruce Lee 🥋

There are three levels of freedom we need to differentiate:

1st is Realistic, Basic, or Fundamental Freedom:

2nd is Freedom of Action or Choice:

3rd is Ultimate Freedom or Freedom of the Mind, Body, and Soul:

This is the type of freedom Bruce Lee is referring to. It is absolute and unencumbered by all external factors.  Preached by Taoists and Stoics alike...

When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.

How many of us are busy? How many of us rush without really knowing why?⠀

It reminds me of a useful allegory from Derek Sivers. We can RELAX, AND get the same RESULT.⠀

Enter DEREK:⠀

"A few years ago, I lived in Santa Monica, California, right on the beach.⠀

There’s a great bike path that goes along the ocean for 7½ miles.⠀
On weekday afternoons, it’s almost empty. It’s perfect for going full-speed.⠀

So a few times a week, I’d get on my bike and go as fast as I could. I mean really full-on, 100%, head-down, red-faced, sprinting.⠀

I’d finish exhausted, and look at the time. 43 minutes. Every time. Maybe a minute more on a really windy day. But basically always 43 minutes.⠀

After a few months, I noticed I was getting less enthusiastic about this bike ride. I think I had mentally linked it with being completely exhausted.⠀

So one day I decided I would do the same ride, but just chill. Take it easy, nice and slow. OK not super-slow, but dialing it back to about 50% of my usual effort.⠀

And ahhh.... What a fun ride. I was relaxed, and smiling, and looking around. Not red-faced. I was barely giving it any effort.⠀

I saw two dolphins in the water. A pelican flew right over me in Marina del Ray. When I looked up to say “wow!”, he shit in my mouth. I can still remember that taste of digested shellfish. I had to laugh at the novelty of it [...]"⠀

Knowledge

Knowledge

Steve Jobs and Mick Jagger would obsess over the smallest details before releasing any of their work. That obsession is arguably a piece of what got them to the top. ⠀

But, when we have a man, regarded as the greatest genius of our time (Albert Einstein), openly downplaying knowledge and promoting imagination, we have to ask and wonder:⠀

What is more important?

After all, Steve Jobs himself said: "Stay hungry, stay foolish".⠀

The taoists would agree with Einstein and Jobs, turns out, so do I 😁⠀

Why I Dropped Out...

Why I Dropped Out...

I never wanted to go to college.

What?! Why?! Those are the best years of your life! Be grateful of the opportunity! Education is important! You need a degree!

Seeing all the families that wanted nothing more than their children go to university made me feel like I needed to go too.

I forgot about my thoughts.

I ended up in a small town in Scotland, of all places, attending the University of St. Andrews.

I had a great time. I made some great friends.  And, I was about as passionate for my studies as a sugar-crazed 5-year-old eating broccoli.
