(but not really; read on.)
We've all been told to follow our dreams.
Whether through the inspiring narrative behind every cartoon, or the reassuring warm feeling our parents give us.
But here's the thing we aren't usually told. It's a simple change of context that may have changed everything all along.
The popularized quote above has been paraphrased and taken out of context. The real passage, from Walden, reads: "I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. [...] If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." - (properly attributed) Henry David Thoreau
Out of context, we're told to follow our dreams confidently. But with context, Thoreau is simply sharing his experience that those who pursue their dreams are met with success. If you've "built castles in the air" (dreampt up big wonderful things) all you have to do now is "put foundations under them" (work hard to support the immensity of these dreams).
Why do I concern myself so much with the words/semantics/minutiae ?
Because the paraphrased quote implies solely that we should pursue our dreams confidently.
The realists scoff and go about their day. The idealists feel inspired and dream on.
But what about the ideal realist?
The one who sees the entirety of the quote in context, and realizes that, like Thoreau, both are right.
If we want to pursue a dream, we're right to go confidently after it. We know that it will be difficult to support such a massive endeavor, but that's what makes the dream worth it. 😉
If we'd been fed this advice our whole lives, maybe we'd have more successful dreamers. Simply because we were given all the context. 🤔
So yes, live the life you have imagined, just do whatever you need to make it happen. 👊
To build your own business requires dream-weaving and brick-laying, a bit of idealism and a lot of realism. I bet if you're reading this right now you have your castle in the sky ready, but need a bit of help constructing the foundations. 🛠👷🏽
